Professor Murray Fraser
Murray Fraser is Professor of Architecture and Coordinator for Postgraduate Studies and Research in the Department of Architecture at the University of Westminster in London. He is a qualified architect with many years experience, and was awarded a Special Commendation in the 2004 RIBA ‘House of the Future’ competition. His academic research involves the integration of post-colonial theory and other aspects of cultural studies with architectural history, and as such he has written extensively on cross-cultural interchange between countries such as Britain, Ireland and the USA.
His latest book on Architecture and the ‘Special Relationship’ (Routledge, 2007), which traces the complex influences of America on post-war British architecture, won two major prizes: the 2008 CICA Bruno Zevi Book Prize, as awarded by the International Committee of Architectural Critics for the best architectural book published anywhere in the world in the previous year, and also the 2008 RIBA President’s Award for Outstanding University-Located Research. He was also a co-editor for the polemical and well-received book on Critical Architecture (Routledge, 2007).
Until recently he was Senior Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Malaysia, and continues to sit on the RIBA Awards Group which amongst other duties draws up the Stirling Prize shortlist. He was a member of the panel that scrutinised research in British architectural schools as part of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. In addition, he is co-editor for The Journal of Architecture (Routledge), a leading international refereed journal in the field.
